P2P traffic is Peer to Peer traffic. It is the kind of Network Traffic that flows to and from nodes (peers) in a P2P network, where all connected nodes have somewhat equal roles as clients and servers at the same time, sharing resources (bandwidth, processing power, storage, files, etc.) with each other.

Proton VPN have certain servers (some or all servers) in certain authorized countries (like Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden, US, UK) that allow P2P traffic even for certain copyrighted content. Whenever your traffic type is detected as anything resembling P2P traffic signatures, while your Proton VPN subscription is FREE (non-paid), your connection to whatever resource you were to access/download via P2P is terminated with the error:

NO P2P TRAFFIC IS PERMITTED ON THIS SERVER
Your connection has been automatically disabled because certain servers (such as free servers and servers with # higher than 100), don't support P2P traffic. If you want to use P2P applications with ProtonVPN, please upgrade to a paid plan.

CASE 1: P2P TRAFFIC AS THE CAUSE OF CONNECTION TERMINATION

The reason for your connection being terminated is that Proton VPN has “High Performance P2P special servers” that, of course, support P2P traffic, but which cannot just be given to you for free. Instead, if you download from P2P sources or use P2P applications and still want to do so over VPN, you need to consider a paid plan with Proton VPN.

SOLUTION: for CASE 1:

Switch to a paid Proton VPN plan to avoid connection termination and such inconveniences,

CASE X: ANY OTHER REASON AS THE CAUSE OF CONNECTION TERMINATION

The above reason, however, is not always the case. At random times, your connection may be terminated with no P2P traffic for whatever reason, maybe as a result of faulty analysis of indicators of P2P traffic.

SOLUTION: for CASE X, you can do whatever works for you in the list below:

OPTION A:- Disconnect the current Proton VPN server in the Proton VPN application you are using and connect to a different server; then refresh the page you were at. If that other server does not work, try another one till the one that works for you.
OPTION B:- Turn off Permanent/ Kill Switch; Disconnect the currently connected Proton VPN server; Close (or Kill) Proton VPN application/ process. Next, restart your Proton VPN instance and connect to a new server, then refresh the page that resulted in the issue you are experiencing.
OPTION C:– Perform actions on either OPTION A or B, then Close/Kiill the Application (or Process or Browser Tab) that resulted in the issue you are facing. Next, restart Proton VPN (for OPTION B), then connect to a different server (for either option), and lastly start a new instance of the Application (or Process or Browser Tab) that resulted in the current P2P mess.
