Fix “There are missing configurations. Please ensure that you have internet connection.” in Proton VPN

While using Proton VPN, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) product by the creator of Proton Mail, Proton.me, you might have encountered the error:

There are missing configurations. Please ensure that you have internet connection.

Though not very common, this error can be a real nightmare. For clarity, this issue was experienced on Linux, not Windows, but it may be that users of Proton VPN on Windows experience the same issue. You might have tried to do one or more, or even all of the following actions in an attempt to fix the error without success;

1. Close/Quit Proton VPN and start it again/afresh.
2. Sign Out then Sign In into your machine.
3. Reboot your machine.

 

[[ SOLUTIONS ]]

There are two solutions to this error:

NOTE:// Make sure you have internet connectivity before proceeding with the solutions and also make sure that the Proton VPN “Kill Switch” is toggled OFF”!

[ SOLUTION 1: LOG OUT / SIGN OUT then LOG IN / SIGN IN into PROTON VPN]

– Navigate to the Proton VPN menu and click on “Logout“. This should lead to the Sign In / Log In interface.
– Enter your account details, Email & Password, and get back to Proton VPN.

Now, you should be able to use Proton VPN as before, without the annoying error.

 

[ SOLUTION 2: UNINSTALL then INSTALL PROTON VPN ]

This solution should come after failure of the first solution. Depending on the machine you are working with, how to uninstall may vary.

– On Linux machines, again depending on which Linux distro you are running, you might either have to uninstall via Terminal utilities like “apt-get“, “apt“, “snap“, “dpkg“, “pacman“, etc., or use GUI (Graphical User Interface) managed package managers to uninstall. This step does a logout same as the first step in the first solution, but does it forcibly.

– The next step should be to get the latest package for Proton VPN and install it using the same package managers or utilities listed above. On Linux machines, you should first update the text-based list of latest/available packages before running the installation.
