Types of Accessibility Features in Computers

Accessibility Features are a way to help those with physical or sensual challenges. These may include people with Visual problems, Hearing problems or physical problems (for instance, people who cannot use their hands, etc). Technology has come to help solve this problem, and even if it is yet to be 100% solved, it has helped to an extent.

Technology developers from different areas have addressed this problem from different perspectives, from Operating Systems to software hosted in these Operating Systems, like Web Browsers. Below are some of available accessibility features;

 

1. Zoom

Zoom feature that allows a user to enlarge or minimize the size of text and images to the size they prefer

2. Display size

This feature affects the size of the normal text, text captions, size of icons, font size, weight, width and face.

3. Keyboard Accessibility Features

Keyboard accessibility features help users who are unable to use a mouse. This feature is in form of keyboard shortcuts for those who cannot use either a mouse; Onscreen keyboard for those who cannot use a keyboard; and Text-to-Speech capabilities for those who cannot use either a mouse or a keyboard .

4. Speech Recognition

This feature helps user perform navigations on a computer as well as searches on the internet without ever using any other input sources like keyboard or mouse. Implementations of this feature include Cortana, Siri, Alexa, etc.

5. High Contrast and Color Enhancer

This feature adjusts contrast as well as enhance colors for those with visual problems.

6. Audio Options

This feature activates Mono audio for those with hearing problems and those who have trouble listening to Stereo audio.
